A native of Georgia (former Soviet Union), Dr. Vladimir O.
Papitashvili was educated in exploration geophysics and studied
electrical properties of the permafrost in Yakutsk (Siberia). In
1975, he joined the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism,
Ionosphere, and Radio Wave Propagation (IZMIRAN, Moscow) as a
magnetologist. During following years he participated in many
Arctic and Antarctic expeditions conducting geomagnetic
observations and research.
In 1992, Dr. Papitashvili received the Stanley Shawhan
Fellowship from the U.S. Coordination Office for International
Solar-Terrestrial Energy Program (STEP). In 1993 he joined the
faculty of the University of Michigan. Currently Dr. Papitashvili
consults the Solar-Terrestrial Division of the Danish Meteorological
Institute on geomagnetic research activities related to the Ørsted
magnetic satellite project
Dr. Papitashvili's major fields of interest are the solar
wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, magnetospheric and
ionospheric currents and electrodynamics, high latitudes geomagnetic
phenomena, global changes in the geomagnetic field, geomagnetic
coordinates and indices. His recent research concentrates to the
development of a new ionospheric convection model parameterized
by the interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind; he also
experienced in practical magnetic field observations, database
programming and management, and data visualization.
Dr. Papitashvili is the author or co-author of over 100 refereed
and professional publications and over 200 invited and contributed
presentations at scientific meetings and conferences. In 1994 he
edited the COSPAR Colloquia Series Volume 5 on Solar-Terrestrial
Energy Program published by Pergamon Press.
