Stratospheric ozone depletion

Arctic ozone depletion in the stratosphere occurs each winter with different strength depending on conditions such as the strength of the arctic vortex (the dynamical conditions), temperature development, amounts of aerosols and trace constituents and presence of polar stratospheric clouds. Meteorological conditions and the amount of ozone present is monitored throughout the winter from many stations operated by many countries. Through the EU project QUOBI I have been involved in performing calculations of the ozone depletion in the winter 2002/03 by the vortex-averaged method.

The tropical tropopause layer

The lower stratosphere has a very low water vapour content compared to the troposphere. Air is mainly transported from the troposphere to the stratosphere in the tropical region. The amount of water is largely controlled by the temperature at the cold point, as slowly ascending air masses are subject to freeze drying. Sometimes deep convective events overshoots into the lower stratosphere with a potential moistening effect.

In order to better understand the dynamics, chemistry and physics of the tropical tropopause layer, stratospheric balloons financed by the EU project HIBISCUS were flown in the tropics. I have been involved in validating winds and temperatures as derived from the ECMWF model with in-situ measurements from the balloons.

During the European SCOUT-O3 project I have participated in 2006 and 2008 in balloon campaigns in West Africa, investigating convective overshoot events.
