IMF-dependent Model of Field-Aligned Currents
from high-precision Ørsted and Magsat data

Space Weather Specification and Forecast

Select parameters and click spacecraft button:

Enter contour interval (automatic selection = 0)

As the user clicks the "Submit" button, this Web-based interface immediately downloads latest available IMF/SW data (measured by the ACE spacecraft at L1 point) from the NOAA/Space Environment Center (SEC) Web site and then provides specification and forecast of the ionospheric field-aligned currents over both the northern and southern polar regions. Note that the downloading may require time... about 1 minute depending on the Internet traffic... therefore, be patient!

This Web-based interface uses the IMF-dependent FAC model recently constructed from high-precision magnetomter measurements made onboard the Ørsted and Magsat satellites in 1999-2001 and 1979-1980, respectively [Christiansen et al., 2001; Papitashvili et al., 2001ab].

We gratefully acknowledge invaluable efforts of the NOAA/SEC staff in providing near-real time IMF/SW data via the World Wide Web. Note also that any use of the LiMIE output for presentations or publications should also be acknowledged. If any questions or comments arise about this technique, please contact Vladimir Papitashvili (SPRL) or Freddy Christiansen (DMI)
