Abstract. Ionospheric modulation of compressible hydromagnetic waves have been examined using the scalar magnetic field data obtained from the Ørsted satellite and in the ground magnetic data from the Japanese sector. The uniformly excellent correlation between the satellite and ground time series suggests that the compressible hydro-magnetic waves are in phase over the latitudinal extent examined. Apart from introducing significant phase delays, the day side E-region is found to partially screen the incoming waves resulting in larger amplitudes at satellite heights. The results, which are consistent with earlier observations, highlight the role played by the E-region of the ionosphere in the propagation process.
