OIST Meeting - First Announcement and Call for Papers
1. OIST Meeting - First Announcement and Call for Papers
From: Pascale Ultré-Guérard, CNES (Pascale.Ultre-Guerard@cnes.fr)
The next OIST meeting will be hosted by CNES and held in Grasse, near
Nice (25 km) on May 2-4, 2000, (just after the EGS XXV General Assembly
in Nice, April 25-29). This first announcement contain information on the
organization, objectives, logistics and the agenda for the meeting and
also instructions for abstracts.
THE ØRSTED SATELLITE
Twenty years after the MAGSAT mission, the Ørsted satellite was
launched with a Delta II rocket from the Vandenberg basis in California
on 23 February 1999. The Ørsted satellite is equipped with instruments
for taking very accurate measurements of the Earth's magnetic field (scalar
and tri-axial magnetometers), the high-energy charged-particle environment
and for remote sensing of the atmosphere and ionosphere using the GPS occultation
technique. Ørsted is in a Low Earth Orbit with an inclination of
96.5°, a perigee at 638 km and an apogee at 849 km. The orbital plane
is slowly drifting in local time, from an initial time of 14:02 LT to 8:20
at the end of the projected 14-month operational period. The principal
aim of the mission is to accurately map the Earth's magnetic field as caused
by internal sources and to characterize current systems in space.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
This meeting will be the first to be held after the launch of the Ørsted
satellite. The objectives are:
-
to provide updated information from the Project about the mission to the
International Science Team
-
to present and discuss the first scientific results obtained with the Ørsted
data.
-
to coordinate future science activities
All of the scientific topics covered by the Ørsted mission will
be discussed: the geomagnetic field of internal and external origins, electrical
conductivity of the mantle, atmosphere and ionosphere sounding, etc. Other
suggestions are welcome. This meeting is open to Ørsted co-investigators
and to all scientists involved in the Ørsted mission.
Kindly share this announcement with your colleagues and other interested
parties, and particularly with people who have not subscribed to the Ørsted
Newsletter.
Sponsorship: The workshop is being organized by CNES.
